Firefox In Bangladesh

Original: Firefox In Bangladesh

The last Firefox Download Day (2008) set a world record. But there were only 19,339 downloads from Bangladesh. Lack of promotion and marketing is certainly the cause.. We want to heavily promote Firefox in BANGLADESH, so that at the end of the year 2009, there's only ONE BROWSER that people use over here ...and that's FIREFOX!

Avatar

Want to create your own avatar? Here are five simple services that will automatically generate unique avatars for you within seconds.

Create your own avatar

Having a cool avatar is important. It makes it easy for others to identify you. If you're not happy with your current avatar or just want to try something new we give you five free avatar makers you might want to check out... We've chosen these free services because of their simplicity. Most of them require very little work to give a good result.

This avatar creator is disturbing at the very least. The cartoonish drawing style is a matter of personal choice. I find it scary, but it might appeal to you. If you're too lazy to configure your own fantastic creature hit the "Go random" button to watch the freak show.

Face your manga

Face your manga avatar

This avatar service is already a hit among many My Opera community members (Violetisha made some pretty cool avatars a while ago). If you're looking for avatars looking intense this might be the service you've been looking for.

extensions.flock.com  (EFC).

We haven't stopped hosting extensions, we've just simplified the back-end submission process, and content that we host.  One of the great bonuses of this is our new ability to host Flock themes.

Flock still embraces extensions and themes, but we will leverage Mozilla's secure back-end hosting environment by encouraging you to get extensions from addons.mozilla.org.  We'll be dedicating our resources to responding to your needs and adding new and exciting capabilities onto the Flock browser.

The broad majority of Firefox extensions have always worked in Flock. Most Flockstars are aware of this and do not visit EFC for their extension needs.  With the shift in focus to content that is Flock-specific, EFC now serves the niche that addons.mozilla.org does not: we provide extensions that enhance the many specific features that are unique to Flock.

Almost all of the developers that have their extensions removed from EFC had their extensions hosted on addons.mozilla.org already.  We continue to support development of extensions for Flock and Firefox, and the developers who have interacted with EFC in the past continue to talk with us about the future of extensions for Flock.  New developers are encouraged to check out our documentation and join us on IRC.

I hope this clarifies our position.  You can still have all the feature benefits of Flock and take advantage of available Firefox extensions.

Community feedback is of the utmost importance to us and will always guide the development of Flock, our website, our extensions and our company.  As always, I welcome your comments and emails.

More on Internet Explorer 8 and IP Licensing

Original: More on Internet Explorer 8 and IP Licensing

When Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 launched in March, I wrote a post describing the permissive intellectual property licensing approaches we took for components of that release, such as Creative Commons licenses for copyrights in selected specs and the Microsoft Open Specification Promise (“OSP”) for implementations of those specs.

Now with the launch of Beta 2, I’m happy to highlight a few ways we’re continuing to make our innovations available to the community.   By doing so, we hope to continue to foster the type of collaboration in the community that is so important to the “generativity” of the Internet, to borrow a term from Jonathan Zittrain (whose new book, by the way, is an important and worthwhile read).

Creative Commons License for Copyright in the Search Suggestions Specification

For Search Suggestions, we’re licensing copyright in the XML Search Suggestions Format Specification under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License.  This license lets others copy, distribute, modify and build upon the specification, even for commercial uses, as long as they give credit to Microsoft and license their own changes under the same terms.  Special thanks to DeWitt Clinton and other contributors to the OpenSearch JSON Search Suggestions extension, whose work relates to the XML Search Suggestions Format spec.&nbs

Microsoft Open Specification Promise for Implementations of the Search Suggestions Specification

Microsoft has developed the Open Specification Promise (“OSP”) to provide a simple and clear patent promise to reassure the broad audience of developers and customers that a given specification can be used for free, easily, now and forever.  The OSP was developed with feedback from customers and the open source community, and we’re happy to make the XML Search Suggestions Format Spec available under the OSP.  The use of the OSP confirms that Microsoft patents needed to implement this specification can be used for free.  More complete information about the OSP can be found here.

Web Slice Icon Guidelines

Web Slice Icon

Internet Explorer 8 introduces Web Slices as a way for web sites to allow users to subscribe to specific content directly within a Web page.  Users can see when content changes and view the updated portion of the Web page directly from the Favorites bar of Internet Explorer.  The Web Slice icon provides a common visual cue that a web page supports web slices.  Developers may freely use the icon under the Web Slice Icon Guidelines that we have developed, which are intended to promote the integrity of the icon as a common symbol for Web Slice functionality.  We made it easier to use the icon in accordance with the Guidelines by making available for

We are pleased to continue to contribute to the web community and, as always, look forward to your feedback.

Meet Bobby

Bobby the dog

This interview took place at Opera's stand in the Smartphone Show (major mobile industry event) in London. The stand is constructed like a garden. And every garden needs a dog, right?

Bobby the West Highland Terrier What's your name and how old are you?

Bobby! West Highland Terrier by origin, Westies among friends. How old do you want me to be? Just kidding. I have no idea. Old enough.

What are you doing at the Smartphone Show?

Having fun, mostly. I get to meet a lot of people in suits. I wish there were more female humans here, though - they have nicer shoes. But they've put me in some kind of indoor garden, with real grass, so that's nice.

What are your duties at this gig?

People pet me and take pics. So I hang around for that. I also chase away people they don't want in their garden, including those who try to steal stuff from our demo tree. I also take a lot of naps under that demo tree.

You are some kind of celebrity dog. What was the last big thing you did?

I recently starred as Toto in The Wizard of Oz at The Royal Festival Hall in London.

There are tons of people from many places and companies at this event. Who do you enjoy the most?

I like the people from a company called Nokia in Finland. They are friendly but stop petting me after a couple of seconds to get down to business. I also like the people from Telefonica in Spain. They smell great. A Swede tried to give me a breath mint. I didn't like it.

Do you use the Opera browser?

I'm a dog. Come on.

Does your agent use the Opera browser?

My agent uses Opera Mini on his mobile to book appointments and talk to his friends. When we travel to strange cities, he uses it to locate great day spas for dogs and places where they sell gourmet dog food. Yum.

Have you seen any other dogs around the show?

Only hot dogs. But here in the UK we call them sausages.

The Opera people spend a lot of time in meetings. Are you included in any meetings?

I've had tons of meeting requests. But so far, the veterinarian who's here to take care of me has declined. I'm not authorized to make any business decisions, they say. Maybe next year.

Big stars like JLO always have crazy demands before they agree to do a gig. What are yours?

I always require a relaxing room. Every 50 minutes I have a 10 minute break. I require a belly rub from a Polynesian belly dancer and I only drink water from the Scottish highlands. I don't require a big, juicy bone although everyone always offers it. Give me some designer dog chocolate instead!

What's your next big project?

To go to bed tonight with a full tummy. Tomorrow morning is a new day. That's all I can say.

We thank Bobby for the interview. For more information about the Smartphone show, have a look in the official Flickr group pool.

Opera's very own Bruce Lawson gave also a presentation (download) yesterday about Widgets on Opera Mobile. A number of companies were invited to pitch their most innovative solution, but Opera won. :hat:

Fonts Fixed (sort-of)

Original: Fonts Fixed (sort-of)

With the help of the good Dave Hyatt, I managed to track down the cause of the strange font behavior in the Cairo port. As it turns out, the problem was actually also present in the CG port, but had a slightly more benign failure mode.

You can read the gory details here.

You will also need the following two patches:

Opera Mini running on the PSP

If you have a PSP you can get Opera Mini installed on it.

Opera Mini on the PSP

Sony's PSP is a popular device, used by many to play games, watch videos and maybe even surf the Web. Well, you can now do the latter one using Opera Mini thanks to a forum post in the QuickJump network.

What you will need is:

Feedback from PSP users are that they find the Opera Mini browser much better. It's faster than the embedded microbrowser. Opera Mini also displays JavaScript enabled pages much better. You can even use Web based services (such as Meebo) on it.

Once you have the PSPKVM and Opera Mini files onto your PSP, launch PSPKVM and locate the Opera Mini files. Open them with "O". They will be installed as an application (accessible from your main menu).

The next step is crucial. Do not launch Opera Mini, yet. It will not work. You have to go "Network setup" and make sure you are connected to a network. After that, go to Opera Mini, but first hit "Start". Select preferred device and click on "O". Make sure that J2ME Standard (480x272) is selected. Save your preferences and launch Opera Mini.

Have fun and enjoy your new browser on the PSP.

Opera 9.61 released

Original: Opera 9.61 released

Hot on the heels of 9.60, we had to release Opera 9.61 to address problems in Opera Link. Alone, each issue we discovered was miniscule and shouldn't have caused any problems, but together, and coupled with some server issues, it turned out to be more serious than we thought.

If you've been using Opera Link and has had problems with Opera freezing, getting duplicate bookmarks from nowhere, eternal syncing or other problems, you should upgrade to 9.61, especially since it also has some security fixes.

Performance

Original: Performance

I was recently asked about the performance of the Cairo-based Webkit. As a first cut I tried running SunSpider to see what would happen. Unfortunately, it identified a serious bug in the WebKit Cairo port, in that the font handling appears to be screwed up. Consider the following screenshot...

It appears that the build is not dealing with code elements properly.

By the way, anyone interested in playing with the Release or Debug binaries of this webkit is welcome to grab the
