The baby falcon is preparing for flight
Hi everyone!
While you may have seen me around in the blogs and forums, this is my first blog post on the desktop team blog. My former team mates and I have in fact been working on the desktop product all along as a separate team, but now we have merged with the rest of the desktop developers and QA to form a new and even stronger (and bigger!) desktop team.
We know that you have been waiting to get your hands on Opera 10 (Peregrine), and I am happy to announce that we are planning to release the first alpha of Opera 10 in the near future. The new version is the result of hard work that has been going on since even before 9.5 was released, and we are finally ready to let it spread its wings and fly out into the real world.
I'm not going to reveal too many details today, but I do want to talk a bit about what you can expect.

A Redistributable WebKit
Well, it's taken a long time to get to this point, but at long last I have managed to get a working version of WebKit that does not use any proprietary Apple libraries. I have posted a Release and Debug build, with the WinLauncher program that produced the accompanying image.

Should be in your mobile: Opera Mini 4.2
Good news, everyone! Today we have released the latest version of Opera Mini 4.2. Since the launch of the beta, speed trials have shown that this version gives more than 30% speed improvements for users in the US, due to addition of a new Opera Mini server park in ther United States.
Good news, everyone! Today we have released the latest version of Opera Mini 4.2
This release also marks Opera Mini's official availability on the latest version of the Android mobile platform. Opera Mini is now the first Web browser alternative on Android. A technical preview of Opera Mini was previously released for an earlier version of Android in April 2008. Users of Android-powered mobile phones, such as the T-Mobile G1, can now download a beta version of Opera Mini 4.2 and experience a faster and less costly way to browse the full Internet.
To celebrate we feel a visual power demonstration is needed. Enjoy our latest video we've made to launch the world's fastest browser for your mobile phone:
Be sure to check back during the day as we will share links to reviews and first impressions on Opera Mini 4.2. :)

CoreFoundation Gone?
One of the major impediments to using WebKit on Windows (assuming you are not writing software for Apple) is that the implementation relies on a suite of proprietary support libraries, such as CoreGraphics, CoreFoundation, and CFNetwork.

API Reference Manual for WebKit/Gtk+
As of two days ago the Gtk+ buildbot is finally running the test suite after every build. And today we even have the first regressions that we need to address/understand. The short-, mid- and long term goal is now to get as many tests running as possible and keep them running. There are quite some bugs to be fixed in WebKit/Gtk+, our base libraries, our testing tools so there is plenty of fun left for everyone.
In the webkit IRC channel we sometimes get questions regarding the API of the WebKit/Gtk+ port and if there are examples. On the one hand we are pretty strong. We have the GtkLauncher, some early adopters, when adding API many people made sure that we have API documentation. On the other hand we are weak as there is no introduction, no generated reference manual, no downloadable samples. So I got a bit sidetracked from the re ear now.
WEBKIT_API type
function_name (function*...);
To make gtkdoc-scan parse the above as a function you will need to pass --ignore-decorators="WEBKIT_API" to the tool. Magically plenty of symbols turned up in the -unused.txt file and I was able to copy them into the -sections.txt. Now the tool refused to find any documentation. So remember WebKit/Gtk+ is mostly written in C++ and gtkdoc-mkdb simply does not know about the ".cpp" file extension. So pass --source-suffixes=c,cpp to gtkdoc-mkdb and it will find the sourcecode. Ah functions and their documentation, almost perfect. The last undocumented bit is for -sections.txt. E.g. you have the various _get_type(void) methods and there is little benefit of having them pop up in the API. Inside your "<SECTION>" you can put them into a "<SUBSECTION Private>" and they will be ignored.
The next thing is to get it actually merged into WebKit and integr
Firefox - Users - Expats in Xi'an (China)
For those who don´t know Xi'an: It is one of the oldest cities in the world and home of the famous Terracotta Warriors. Unfortunately it is still IE dominated as I can see it in my Site stats (IE6-Disgusting) but we are gonna change that, right? Perhaps by sticking the Firefox logo on a Warriors head?

Startup problems
Since yesterday's release we've run into some startup problems. Here's a list of identified and known issues with the current site. You can also help if you've identified any bugs.
Since yesterday's release we've run into some startup problems. We're working hard to get all the new cool features on My Opera back up and running again. Thanks for
My Opera might be slow from time to time as we continue optimization. This is a known issue and if you experience proxy errors, no response or general slowness this is something we're working to fix as soon as possible.
Profile images and avatars are not showing. We're currently using a temporary image placeholder. Your image and avatar is not removed or deleted. All data is restored and you will have your profile picture and avatar back soon. Edit: Fixed! :hat:
Activity Feed. The newly added feed to My Opera is currently deactivated due to performance issues. This will be fixed soon.
After sorting pictures in a photo album it does not save, but simply redirects to the edit page. Yes, this is confirmed too. We're fixing it. :)
We have reports on Swedes visiting where My Opera automatically thinks they're Norwegian... Well, this is unfortunate (whether this is a bug or a "feature" can be discussed), but the site should be displayed in English if your native language is not supported.
Blue Beanie Day
We're hereby announcing My Opera's participation in the second annual Blue Beanie Day. Please join us on Friday, November 28, 2008 with thousands of Standardistas to show your support for Web standards and accessibility.
About Blue Beanie Day
Blue Beanie Day is the brainchild of Doug Vos, creator of the Designing With Web Standards group on Facebook. Since October 27, 2007, over 4,300 members have joined, representing over nie* on Friday November 28.
On November 28, switch your profile picture and post your royal blueness to the Blue Beanie Day 2008 photo group at Flickr and to the Blue Beanie group photo album on My Opera. That's all there is to it!
So, who's in? I know I am!

IE8: Whatâs After Beta 2
The announcement of IE8 Beta 2 started an important and public phase of the product development cycle getting broad public feedback. The team is providing detailed information and answering questions about the product
Since the release of Beta 2, the team has been absorbed in the data we get from real people about the product. We have combed through instrumentation of over 20 million IE sessions and hundreds of hours of usability lab sessions. Together with IE MVPs, we have scrutinized thousands of threads from user forums and examined the issues that people are raising (not to mention all the times users opt to "Report a Webpage Problem…"). We have also sp
We will release one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, and then follow that up with the final release. Our next public release of IE (typically called a "release candidate") indicates the end of the beta period. We want the technical community of people and organizations interested in web browsers to take this update as a strong signal that IE8 is effectively complete and done. They should expect the final product to behave as this update does. We want them to test their sites and services with IE8, make any changes they feel are necessary for the best possible customer experience using IE8, and report any critical issues (e.g., issues impacting robustness, security, backwards compatibility, or completeness with respect to planned standards work). Our plan is to deliver the final product after listening for feedback about critical issues.
We will be very selective about what changes we make between the next update and final release. We will act on the most critical issues. We will be super clear about product changes we make between the update and the final release.
The call to action now for the technical community is to download beta 2 (if you haven't already) and let us know about your experience. Next, please prepare for final testing with public update so you can let us know – quickly, loudly, and clearly – if you find absolutely critical issues with it before the release of the final product.
Thanks –
Dean Hachamovitch
General Manager, Internet Explorer
P.S. If you're a developer, or service provider, or IT professional, how do you prepare for the final release of new software? Leave a comment – we'd like to know.

New and improved My Opera features
-
New fresh My Opera look
We've tried to keep My Opera fresh, clean and easy on the eye and we really hope you like it. This look in particular has been worked alongside with new www.opera.com. We want to have a more unified browsing experience when visiting our new Web sites. You can also highlight and influence more what others see on My Opera by using the "spotlight" function when you're logged and surf around on your friends blogs.
-
Now available in 5 languages
You can now have most parts of My Opera's user interface translated into Norwegian, Chinese, Italian and Spanish. You can change language using the drop down menu available at the bottom of this page. More languages such as Vietnamese, Japanese, etc. will follow soon.
-
1 GB of free storage space
We've upped the ante! Another reason to celebrate. :) We wanted to give everyone more free storage space because, well... We want to see more of your stuff! More photos, more blog posts, more good stuff!
-
Friends activity feed on home page
View a live and direct list based upon your friend's latest activities in the community. This list is generated based on mutual agreement between you and your friend (you both have to each other added as a friend). This is an exciting new feature and we will continue development in the future and add many extra functionalities to it. This is a first version we hope you'll appreciate.
-
Now you can help moderate too
On all forums posts and album pictures you can now report it as offensive and/or violating our terms of service or guidelines. The report feature is your way to further help us make sure My Opera's spam free and that we don't have any nasty pictures. All reports will be investigated by a My Opera moderator. :)
-
New blog themes
New My Opera users will now have a slick blog theme which fits perfectly with the official My Opera look. You can also try it out if you want from "My page", "Account" and "Design". There's also a new theme called "In the Shadows". We recommend you check them out....
-
Mobile optimized site
There has been a lot of mobile optimizations for this release! For example, we now use smaller pictures for faster loading while surfing the site on mobile. You can even see how My Opera would like on a mobile be clicking "view mobile site" at the bottom of this page.
-

A cool slideshow has been added for all photo albums. Simple click the "view slideshow" button in albums overview for a full screen slide show of your photos (note: not yet available for mobile phones).
-
Redesigned messages interface
Friendlier interface for viewing messages. You can now also see your friends avatars. More improvements will follow later. :)
-
Massive code improvements
We've rewritten a huge percentage of the entire code on My Opera! This is a huge step in order to deliver more, better and faster features for you in the future. It will greatly allow us to grow the community even more.
-

The new Opera Link drop down menu allows you to quicker and easier access your synchronised content. It also allows you to merge duplicate bookmarks — read more about Opera Link.

HTML tweaks
While adding new features and improving old ones, we had to tweak the HTML code a bit. Please check your CSS if you have any. Small changes have been made to "friends", "latest visitors" and "latest comments". Some more changes has also been made to the photo albums section and the top menu is now placed inside the #wrap3 div (on most designs). Feel free to ask any questions about this.
-
Bug fixes
A lot of bug fixes are included in this release. How many? We lost count... It's that many! :) Thanks to all who reported bugs in the forums and participated in the private beta testing.
-
And...!
A whole lot more stuff you'll discover while surfing the site! For example; check out the editor's picks photo albums... ;)
